Description

Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union represents more than 300,000 families and indirectly supports the livelihood and daily survival of more than 15 million people in Ethiopia through high quality coffee production. Located in Gedeo, Southern Ethiopia, YCFCU was founded in 2002 and represents 23 member cooperatives like Tumticha Cooperative.

Altogether, these member cooperatives make up more than 300,000 families. Coffee directly affects the livelihood and daily survival of more than 15 million people in Ethiopia, therefore the YCFCU works hard to promote high quality standards.

Before exportation, coffee is brought to the quality control center where they ensure the original character of the coffee and ensure high quality exporting standards of the green coffee and in the cup. Additionally, premiums to farmers based on coffee grade is a measure that they are implementing to increase the quality of coffee. To produce high-quality coffee, the YCFCU requires its farmers to pick only cherries that are fully-ripened. The cherries are then sorted to remove anything that is not up to standard. Clean cherries are pulped, fermented, washed and dried to retain 12% moisture. YCFCU has its own processing facility in Addis Ababa, where the dried coffee with parchment is bagged and transported to hulling machines and warehouses.

The YCFCU is involved in a few projects including a School Desks for Children program where they purchased 500 school desks for children in the community. Second, the cooperative union in the Yirgacheffe area worked together to ensure that electricity is installed in their area. Last, the cooperative realised a vital need in the transport sector. Initially, it was impossible to access the markets as the old bridge was rotting off. In response to this need, a new bridge was built, thanks to the farmers union. Market access and development increased dramatically.

About Us

Our story starts with the simple, but age old belief that people are good. This goodness multiplies when people share what they know, what they love and what they o offer. Some of our best ideas, biggest smiles and warmest moments have been shared around a great cup of coffee. In these moments, we found our Panacea.

With a passion for coffee and a dream to become a place for people to share, we opened Panacea Coffeehouse, Cafe & Roastery. Since 2002, we have become that place – a meeting place, a celebrating place and a sharing place. As we continue to live our dream, we go the way we started.

We select, roast and brew Good Coffee for Good People knowing that each cup offers the drinker a chance to find their own Panacea
